If you are an “empath”, you have the ability to recognize and feel other people’s emotions. Often times when you are an empath, you are absorbing much of the pain and suffering in your environment, which can sacrifice your own ability to function at optimum levels.
If you have ever been in a room with a negative person or what we like to call “Energy Vampires,” you know just how toxic their energy can be.
Here are five ways to stop absorbing other people’s negative energy:
1. You can’t please everyone (so stop trying).
If someone is bullying you, complaining about or to you, or making you feel uncomfortable – do not make it your mission to try to convince that person to like you.
This will only suck you deeper into their negative energy field and that will make you energetically dependent on their opinion of you.
You can’t please everyone and you certainly can’t change people without their consent (nor do you want to). The best thing you can do is to love yourself first and this will create a force field around you that will protect you from being drained by other people’s negativity.
2. Be careful who you invite into your life.
Your body, mind and personal environment are very special and personal places. Who are you inviting in?
Is it an open invitation? Do you set boundaries when people come into your life or do you let them drag mud on your soul?
It is great to be generous, but there is a fine line to work with so you are not being constantly trampled on. If you know someone is an energy vampire, be cautious of letting him or her into your life. It’s okay to help those that truly need it, but it is also more than okay to say “no”. Honor yourself in the process of generosity.
3. Don’t pay attention to negative people.
A parasite needs a host to survive! When you pay attention to somebody else, you are giving them energy. We all know that what you focus on grows. If you focus on energy vampires, they will only steal your thoughts and energy, decreasing your personal energy.
Love yourself enough to tune these people out. It does not make you a bad or mean person to reject their toxic energy.
4. Breathe in nature; relax, and recharge.
Go and spend time in nature, relax and breathe. Think of yourself as a battery – and the way you can re-charge yourself is by focusing on the breath. Breathing increases the blood flow circulation around the body and will help prevent the absorption of energy from those around you.
Try to meditate at least ten minutes a day. Some people like to use music or crystals to assist and amplify the positive effects of meditation. Practice whatever form of meditation suits you the best. This could simply be just taking a walk around the neighborhood.
5. Take responsibility for your thoughts & emotions.
How you feel is 100% your responsibility. Remember, the perception we have of ourselves is greater than the perception others have on us. You have power over YOU – nobody else – and you are the creator of your own reality!
Practice journaling, writing positive affirmations and setting goals / intentions. You will be amazed at how just thinking and feeling positive will boost your own energy and create a more positive space for others to be part of too.
Learning to protect yourself against other people’s energies starts with self-love. Remember that you are worthy of happiness and peace. You are the author of your own energetic state.
