I had always been an overweight kid. I played football starting at age 12, so nobody ever really said anything about it because I was an offensive lineman and you need to have some weight on you. I was eating terribly and was very self-conscious about my body, but because I was a “football player”, I shrugged it off. After I graduated high school, I went off to college weighing about 205 pounds, which is heavy for my 5 foot 10 inch frame.
Once I got to college, things went south over the course of my first 2 years. I was still living an unhealthy lifestyle, with the addition of drinking as well and I did not have the requirement of regular exercise like I did in high school.
Over my first 2 years of college, I went from 205 lbs to 250 lbs. I was extremely heavy and unhappy with my physical appearance. I went home in the summer after my sophmore year and my mother showed me a picture of my grandfather, a man I never met because he had died of a heart attack in his 50’s shortly after my parents were married.
When she showed me that picture, I was shocked – I looked just like him.
My mother is a very fit person and she simply stated, “If you don’t change your lifestyle, your life will be cut short just like his.” That moment really resonated with me and I made a conscious decision to change my life from that point on.
I jump started my system by cutting out carbs for one month to shock my system. Over the next year, I got back down to 200 lbs. I was invigorated by working out and living a healthy lifestyle, but I hit a plateau. I was stuck at 200 lbs for over a year. I looked in the mirror and just didn’t feel like the guy who was staring back at me.
Another motivation was that I had taken up surfing that year and I fell in love with it, but I was still too heavy to do the things I really wanted to do on a surfboard.
After continually tweaking my diet and exercise and workout routine, I came across juicing (via Fitlife.tv), fasting and high intensity interval training. Juicing and fasting every day, plus this new workout regimen kick revved up my metabolism and I dropped another 25 lbs over the next 6-8 months.
I gained most of my knowledge of juicing from Drew’s website as well as listening to him on the Knowledge For Men podcast with Andrew Ferebee. From that moment, I signed up for his newsletter and followed his Alpha Reset once every 6 months.
I now follow a regimen of intermediate fasting, juicing, high intensity interval training and surfing. All of which have been integral in my transformation. I believe that we all need something that continues to push/challenge us. There are weight loss goals, training goals, etc. that I have met – and exceeded even – but there is always more to learn. Surfing in particular is something that I find to be a constant challenge, which I love.
Surfing is a lifelong endeavor for me and wills me to keep my body in the best shape I can in order to continue to improve in the water. If there was something that I could pass on to all people with weight loss goals, it is to be sure to have something that drives you and keeps you motivated to stay the course. It could be a hobby or loved one or anything in between, but I believe that something needs to be in place in order for you to not just reach your fitness/health goals, but to exceed them for a sustained period of time.
I’ve been able to keep my weight steady at 175 since 2012! I have found more confidence over the past few years than I have at any time in my life. I have found confidence in myself inside and out that I never knew existed! I have found a healthy weight lifestyle that I can lean on to stay fit for the rest of my life. I finally feel like the man I see in the mirror and the man I feel like inside are in stride.
